I have a confession to make: I’ve let myself get stuck in a couple of bad habits lately, and I am really keen to break out of them.
One thing is that I’ve been eating a bit too much chocolate. It’s dark chocolate, quite lovely, and I usually only have a couple of squares, so it’s not a huge deal.
But the point is that I’m eating out of habit, not always out of enjoyment.
I mostly have it after lunch, and it’s gotten to where I feel like I should have it – not that it’s a special treat. This isn’t the kind of relationship I want to have with chocolate.
I’ve said many times that there’s nothing wrong with eating chocolate, and I stand by that. The distinction for me is that I feel like it’s a bit more of an addiction than a healthy relationship.
Chocolate Smoothie Recipe
This is what I’m sipping in the video:
- 3 cups water
- 1 Tbsp ground flaxseed
- 1-2 Tbsp cocoa or carob powder
- 1 Tbsp cocoa nibs
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 Tbsp vegan protein powder (optional)
- 1 Tbsp greens powder (optional, though really tasty if you get the chocolate flavor)
Do you have any cravings or addictions you want to kick?
The other bad habit I’ve found myself stuck in is that because I think about food all day long – creating recipes and meal plans – I tend to eat more than I need. When I come up with a fun new healthy snack idea, I want to try it.
There is such a thing overeating healthy food!
I don’t usually talk about that, because I’d much rather you eat too much healthy food than go hungry and wind up eating junk foods.

So, what this leads to is that it’s time for me to do a cleanse! It’s summer! This is the time for it, as we start contemplating wearing bikinis at the beach, right?
My Definition of Cleanse
Now let me be clear on my definition of a cleanse: eating healthy whole foods, and releasing whatever’s dragging us down – not about starving ourselves.
Whatever you’ve heard about cleanses being about depriving yourself, being really difficult and making your feel weak is not the approach I have to cleanses. This is going to be fun, and you’ll have lots of energy, I promise!
This cleanse is about lightening things up on your system, but giving you balanced nutrition and nourishment to fuel your day. It’s about reconnecting with joy and what really matters in life.
There’s usually no need to do the intense kind of detox cleanses you often see touted. Your body is a wonderful machine that will naturally take care of anything bad in your system if you get out of the way and allow it to.
So what we’re doing here is not forcing your body to detoxify – we’re just enabling it to do what it’s designed to do!
Why Cleanse?
My goals are to kick those habits I mentioned and boost my energy levels. What are your goals? Maybe you want to:
- Improve digestion
- Reduce gas
- Improve nutrient absorption from your food
- Eliminate toxins
- Break addictions or cravings, including an addiction to food in general or overeating
- Discover hidden allergies
- Boost energy
- Boost function of glands or liver
- Kick start a weight loss diet plan
- Reinvigorate healthy eating plan
