It’s all too easy to say you’re going to eat healthier, but quickly fall back into your same old (unhealthy) habits.

In order to succeed, you need to have a clear plan to achieve your goals. I’ve put together a strategy to help you break out of that cycle and get started on your path to success.

Before you get all strict with yourself, make sure you have the right attitude about your new diet plan.

Think on the positive side. Motivate yourself towards healthy eating by making a list (in your head or on paper) of the benefits you’ll get.

Weight loss is one, but it doesn’t end there. Imagine the energy you’ll have when you’re healthy and lighter. Imagine being able to keep up with your kids – or even grandkids. Imagine feeling more self-confident when you walk into a room.

My list looked like this when I started thinking about healthy eating:

  • Lose the 10 lbs gained working in an office all day
  • Have the energy and confidence to play frisbee with Phil at the beach in a bikini
  • Be as ridiculously healthy as possible

Whatever your goals are, try to think of both the short- and long-term results. The more reasons you have to be motivated, the more likely you’ll be to have success. Having that list written somewhere can remind you of the ups when you’re feeling down.

Now that you’re pumped about getting a healthy eating plan together, here are 6 steps to help you do it:

  1. Daily Food Diary Template
    Print off this food diary and use it through the day to track what you eat and – more importantly – how you feel. Food diaries keep you accountable, and tracking how you feel helps you see the connection to what you eat.
  2. Daily Calorie Needs Calculator
    Put in your age, height, weight, gender and activity level to get an estimate of how much you should be eating during the day. Then compare what you put in your food diary to see if you’re on track.
