It is really hard to stop sugar cravings – but it’s not impossible! There are some simple things you can do to make it sooo much easier to stick to a healthy eating plan.
You need to have willpower, but don’t beat yourself up too much for giving in to those sugary cravings because there are some pretty powerful forces at work undermining your natural ability to resist temptation.
The ingredients in junk food, stress, lack of sleep and imbalances in our gut bacteria all affect the ability of your body and mind to resist the temptation of sugary treats.
I’ve always had a sweet tooth, but luckily I love fruit.
If you put a watermelon in front of me, I’ll just keep eating it until my stomach can’t take any more. I do the same thing with pineapple, but it’s usually my tongue burning from the acidity that stops me.
I’m not immune to the lure of candy and chocolate, though, either. I used to love chewy gummies – especially the sour ones. And I still love chocolate.
But what I’ve found is that as I got into a healthy eating plan long term, I still want to have sweet things but it’s not an intense craving.
Here are 3 really powerful tips to help you stop sugar cravings…

- Healthier Treats: If you swap the store-bought cookies and chocolate bars for homemade Oatmeal Cookies or Chocolate Gingerbread Pudding, made with whole foods and pure cocoa, you’ll avoid the refined sugars that are so addictive, along with the preservatives and other junk. You also value a treat more if you make it yourself, so you might find yourself savoring them more – rather than inhaling them.
- Sleep: There’s some new research showing that sleep affects the part of your brain that controls willpower. So if you’re short on sleep, you’ll likely find it harder to resist temptation. Getting quality sleep on a regular basis will not only make you a lot healthier and energetic, but it will also help you conquer your cravings.
- Probiotics: Bacteria and yeasts feed on sugars. If your balance of bad bacteria is high relative to good bacteria, your sugar cravings will be really intense. And eating too much sugar feeds those bad bacteria, so it gets to be a downward cycle. Lots of people have found that when take a quality probiotic (liquid or supplement – you can find my favorites here), their sugar cravings go away.
If you follow all of these, I think you’ll find that you’ll stop craving sugar as much.
You might always have a sweet tooth, like me, but you should find yourself satisfied with healthier treats like whole grain cookies and fruit-based desserts.
I’ve found that my taste buds changed as my healthy eating habits grew stronger.
If I eat gummy candies now, they taste kind of like plastic. And I’ve always been a dark chocolate kind of girl, but now I find the darker the better.
